Molten Flux Synthesis of Plutonium (IV) Silicates K 2 PuSi 2 O 7 and Rb 2 PuSi 6 O 15

Few plutonium containing silicates have been reported in the literature and only one other tetravalent plutonium silicate structure has been reported using the flux growth method. With the goal of understanding actinide incorporation into silicates, we describe herein two new plutonium (IV) silicates, Rb 2 PuSi 6 O 15 and K 2 PuSi 2 O 7 , synthesized using a mixed alkali chloride/alkali fluoride flux growth. Both structures crystallize in the C2/c space group with lattice parameters a=24.2980(10) Å, b=7.1466(3) Å, c=17.2025(8) Å and $\blacksquare$96.6560(10)° for Rb 2 PuSi 6 O 15 , and a=9.9478(2) Å, b=5.59820 (10) Å, c=13.1848(2) Å, and $\blacksquare$105.7400(10)° for K 2 PuSi 2 O 7 . Comparisons to the synthesis of other reported alkali actinide silicates (Ce, U, and Th) are made. Raman spectra and DFT calculations of formation enthalpies and vibrational modes provide confirmation of structure refinements and enhanced product characterization for comparison with other materials.

Direct Feed High-Level Waste APPS Model Glass Testing (DFHLW APPS) Matrix

This report summarizes the data collected during the batching and melting of the Direct Feed High-Level Waste APPS Model Glass Matrix (DFHLW APPS) to serve as a quality-assured validation of the Aspen Process Performance Simulation (APPS) formulation method. Of 15 glasses tested, 12 satisfied all target property constraints. Two glasses, APPS-05 and -06, formed nepheline on canister centerline cooling heat-treatment and failed the Product Consistency Test response limits. Glass APPS-07-2 formed unacceptably high concentrations of crystals (primarily Na3Nd(PO4)2) when heat treated at 950 °C. All other glasses were found to be satisfactory. The measured property values were compared to predicted values from a set of current models. In many cases the current models were found to be inadequate for design of DFHLW glasses. These models are being adjusted to correct for mispredictions. Other models, e.g., density, toxicity characteristic leaching procedure, and sulfur solubility, are adequate for formulation of DFHLW glasses.

CFA-17-12798: Nanostructured Ceramic Membranes for Enhanced Tritium Management

This project focuses on the novel use of interfacial hydrated layers in ionic conducting ceramic materials for tritiated water (HTO) adsorption and recovery. Low-temperature water adsorption properties of nanoscale structured ceramics combined with hydrogen isotope exchange in their hydrated layers could provide a low-cost and transformative avenue to address tritium management challenges.

Metal-Organic Framework Glasses as Rad Contaminant Sequesters and Nuclear Waste Forms

Remediation of Tc remains an unresolved problem at SRS and other DOE sites. The objective of this project was to develop novel metal organic framework (MOF) glasses for radioactive contaminant sequestration and stabilization from aqueous media. During FY20, we synthesized, characterized and evaluated additional cetyltrimethylcimmonium bromide (CTAB)-functionalized and F - , Cl - , I - , CF 3 SO 3 - exchanged MIL-101-Cr samples. MIL-10l-Cr-NO 3 -CTAB was demonstrated to have high ReO 4 - removed capacity (139 mg/g sorbent) from artificial groundwater (AGW). Re chemical specicition and binding mechanism on MIL-101-CTAB were also studied by synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy. ReO 4 - was demonstrated as being in the pore structure with slightly larger Re-O bond distances than those in NciReO 4 and binding with the positively charged sites of CTAB. In addition, a new Ni-TIPA MOF was demonstrated to be very stable, selective and effective for TcO 4 - removed from the SRS tank waste stream (~90% removed). The Ni-TIPA MOF sample containing ReO 4 - was prepared and shipped/planned for vitrification studies by a high-pressure technique. This research may provide a highly applicable platform for solving critical DOE and industrial problems related to nuclear environmental stewardship and nuclear power production.
