Integral Experiment Request 554: CED-2 Summary Report

This report summarizes the critical experiment design 2 (CED-2) or final design study for Integral Experiment Request 554 (IER-554). This experiment describes the effects and importance of adding a commercially available neutron absorber material to a known light-water low-enriched uranium assembly. The assembly in question is the Seven Percent Critical Experiments (7uPCX) at Sandia National Laboratories. The neutron absorber plates considered for the experiment are known as Boralcan and are made of boron carbide (B 4 C) particles embedded in 1100 aluminum alloy. The concentrations of B 4 C and 1100 aluminum were changed as well as the thickness and the positions of the plates, and the fuel rod configuration was adapted to ensure that the assembly would be critical in each case studied. A total of 6 critical configurations, each with a neutron absorber plate inserted, are described in this report. No results of high-quality integral experiments involving neutron absorbers made with B 4 C and 1100 aluminum plates are currently publicly available. Sensitivity to the neutron absorber plate material definition, isotopes, and cross sections of specific regions and configurations are also analyzed. As part of the final design of the experiment, a safe plate holder made of 3003 aluminum was designed. The study results indicate that these experiments are achievable with sufficiently low uncertainties and minimal modification to the assembly, and the CED-3 phase can start when funding allows.

Critical Experiments Targeting the Epithermal/Intermediate Cross Sections of Tantalum

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have collaborated to develop a capability to test the epithermal/intermediate cross sections of materials at the SNL critical experiments facility using the Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) fuel. The Sandia Critical Experiments Program provides a specialized facility for performing water moderated and reflected critical experiments with UO 2 fuel rod arrays. The facility offers the ability to modify the core configuration and reactor tank to evaluate various reactor cores for pitch, moderator characteristics, and other criteria. A history of safe operations and flexibility in reactor core configuration has resulted in the completion of nine sets of critical benchmark experiments that have been documented in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook. The experiment described here is expected to be evaluated for inclusion in the 2024 edition of the ICSBEP Handbook.

Completion of Critical Experiments with Molybdenum Sleeves at Sandia

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and the Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN) have collaborated on the design and execution of a set of critical experiments that explore the effects of molybdenum in water moderated fuel-rod arrays. The molybdenum is included as sleeves (tubes) on some of the fuel rods in the arrays. The fuel used in the experiments is known at Sandia as the Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) fuel. This fuel has been used is several published benchmark evaluations in including LEU-COMP-THERM-78 and LEU-COMP THERM-080.

Experiments to Measure the Effect of Tantalum on Critical Systems

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) collaborated to develop a capability to test the epithermal/intermediate cross sections of materials at the SNL critical experiment facility using the Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) fuel. As a result, a new set of critical experiments has been designed to target the epithermal cross sections of tantalum (Ta) and is scheduled to be performed at SNL in 2023. These critical experiments will be evaluated for inclusion in the 2024 edition of the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook. The focus of these critical experiments is to measure the effects of Ta on the critical array size. The critical array size will be determined by an approach-to-critical experiment with the number of fuel rods in the array as a free parameter. The core configurations are designed to optimize the reactivity worth of Ta and the overall percentage of Ta absorption rates in the epithermal/intermediate energy range (0.625 eV – 100 keV). The baseline core configuration includes 7uPCX fuel rods set at a triangular pitch of 1.016 cm and a central dry test region that utilizes a cadmium liner for filtering out thermal neutrons. The central test region has locations for 85 Ta rods set at a triangular pitch of 0.813 cm. The Ta reactivity worth for the case with 85 Ta rods is approximately 2.55%, with the percentage of Ta absorption rates within the intermediate energy range at nearly 90%.

Molybdenum Sleeves Experiments in the Sandia Critical Experiments Facility

Sandia National Laboratories and the Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire have collaborated on the design and execution of a set of critical experiments that explore the effects of molybdenum in water-moderated fuel-rod arrays. The molybdenum was included as sleeves on some of the fuel rods in the critical experiment fuel arrays. Approach-to-critical experiments were performed on five configurations of fuel and molybdenum sleeves using the 7uPCX fuel in core hardware that set the triangular fuel rod pitch at 15.494 mm. The experiments are evaluated as benchmark critical experiments for the 2023 edition of the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook as LEU-COMP-THERM-111.

Design of UO 2 -BeO Critical Experiment at Sandia [Poster]

The purpose of this proposal is to design a new integral critical experiment to investigate the effects of beryllium oxide and high assay low-enriched uranium fuels. this proposal considers using several existing resources at Sandia: (1) the Critical Experiments (SCX) facility and water tank, (2) spare UO 2 -BeO fuel for the Annular Core Research Reactor (ACRR), and 7uPCX fuel rods from previous benchmark experiments.
