NASA's access to space study

A NASA study to identify and assess the major alternatives for a long range direction for space transportation is summarized. The scope of this 'access to space' study was to support all U.S. needs for space transportation for several decades into the future, including civilian, commercial, and defense needs.

Mars - Destination and challenge

A general evaluation is conducted of the challenges associated with prospective Mars exploration efforts. The technical challenge posed stems from the unforgiving physical environment of space travel, and such peculiarities of Mars as its great orbital eccentricity and 15-year cyclic variation in transfer energy. Additional considerations arise from the 'architecture' of NASA's Space Exploration Initiative, encompassing the determination of a Mars exploration effort's purpose, scope, and schedule. Finally, numerous unresolved issues arise from the definition of detailed scientific experimentation that is to be done for the sake of the greatest long-term benefit to an understanding of Mars, and the rallying of political support behind a major new exploration initiative.

Status and plans for exploration technology

The present status of the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) is discussed. SEI mission planning is reviewed, including various architectural options, their waypoints, and their strategic features. SEI technology needs and issues are examined in order of priority and technology development plans are described.

The Space Exploration Initiative

The goals of the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) and the content and current status of NASA activities and studies relevant to the SEI are briefly reviewed. The principal way points of the program are discussed with particular reference to lunar exploration, preparations for a Martian mission, habitation, and fuels. Attention is also given to the problem of enhancing energy delivery on earth, the use of asteroids as way points, and activities related to the human exploration of Mars.

An Odyssey for the turn of the millennia

The paper discusses one of the goals of the U.S. national space policy, i.e., to expand human presence and activity beyond earth orbit into the solar system. Journeys to the Moon and Mars, involving Space Station Freedom and robotic spacecraft, require advances in technology and opportunities for international cooperation are substantual. Two or more significantly different reference mission architectures are planned to be developed and United States astronauts are expected to land on Mars before 2019. Ideas and technologies which may benefit the Space Exploration Initiative are channeled to a program, called 'Outreach Program', to be later assessed by the Synthesis Group, an organization of senior U.S. specialists.
