Observation of Enhanced Double Parton Scattering in Proton-Lead Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 8.16 TeV

A study of prompt charm-hadron pair production in proton-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}$ = 8.16 TeV is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 30 nb -1 , collected with the LHCb experiment. Production cross sections for different pairs of charm hadrons are measured and kinematic correlations between the two charm hadrons are investigated. This is the first measurement of associated production of two charm hadrons in proton-lead collisions. The results confirm the predicted enhancement of double parton scattering production in proton-lead collisions compared to the single parton scattering production.

Search for the doubly heavy $ {\Xi}_{bc}^0 $ baryon via decays to D0pK-

A search for the doubly heavy \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) baryon using its decay to the D 0 pK – final state is performed using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb - 1 . No significant signal is found in the invariant mass range from 6.7 to 7.2 GeV/ c 2 . Upper limits are set at 95% credibility level on the ratio of the \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) production cross-section times its branching fraction to D 0 pK - relative to that of the \( {\Lambda}_b^0\to {D}^0{pK}^{-} \) decay. The limits are set as a function of the \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) mass and lifetime hypotheses, in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and in the transverse momentum region from 5 to 25 GeV/ c . Upper limits range from 1 . 7 × 10 - 2 to 3 . 0 × 10 - 1 for the considered \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) mass and lifetime hypotheses.

Study of the lineshape of the χ c1 (3872) state

A study of the lineshape of the χ c1 (3872) state is made using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb –1 collected in pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the LHCb detector. Candidate χ c1 (3872) and ψ(2S) mesons from b-hadron decays are selected in the J/ψπ + π – decay mode. Describing the lineshape with a Breit-Wigner function, the mass splitting between the χ c1 (3872) and ψ(2S) states, Δm, and the width of the χ c1 (3872) state, Γ BW , are determined to be Δm=185.598 ± 0.067 ± 0.068 MeV, Γ BW = 1.39 ± 0.24 ± 0.10 MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Using a Flatté-inspired model, the mode and full width at half maximum of the lineshape are determined to be mode = 3871.69+0.00+0.05 – 0.04–0.13 MeV, FWHM=0.22 +0.07+0.11–0.06–0.13 MeV. An investigation of the analytic structure of the Flatté amplitude reveals a pole structure, which is compatible with a quasibound D 0 D¯ *0 state but a quasivirtual state is still allowed at the level of 2 standard deviations.

Searches for low-mass dimuon resonances

Searches are performed for a low-mass dimuon resonance, X, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb -1 and collected with the LHCb detector. The X bosons can either decay promptly or displaced from the proton-proton collision, where in both cases the requirements placed on the event and the assumptions made about the production mechanisms are kept as minimal as possible. The searches for promptly decaying X bosons explore the mass range from near the dimuon threshold up to 60 GeV, with nonnegligible X widths considered above 20 GeV. The searches for displaced $X → µ^+µ^-$ decays consider masses up to 3 GeV. None of the searches finds evidence for a signal and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the $X → µ^+µ^-$ cross sections, each with minimal model dependence. In addition, these results are used to place world-leading constraints on GeV-scale bosons in the two-Higgs-doublet and hidden-valley scenarios.

Study of the ψ 2 (3823) and χ c1 (3872) states in B + → (J/ψπ + π - )K + decays

The decays B + → J/ψπ + π – K + are studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions between 2011 and 2018. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions with the intermediate ψ 2 (3823), χ c1 (3872) and ψ(2S) states are reported.

Measurement of the ${\Lambda}_b^0$→ J/ψΛ angular distribution and the ${\Lambda}_b^0$ polarisation in pp collisions

This paper presents an analysis of the \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) → J/ψ Λ angular distribution and the transverse production polarisation of \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) baryons in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb – 1 , collected with the LHCb experiment. The polarisation is determined in a fiducial region of \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of 1 < p T < 20 GeV/ c and 2 < η < 5, respectively. The data are consistent with \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) baryons being produced unpolarised in this region. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter of the Λ → pπ – decay is also determined from the data and its value is found to be consistent with a recent measurement by the BES III collaboration.

Test of lepton universality with $ {\Lambda}_b^0\to {pK}^{-}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{+}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{-}$ decays

The ratio of branching fractions of the decays \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) → pK - e + e - and \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) → pK - μ + μ - , \( {R}_{pK}^{-1} \) , is measured for the first time using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4 . 7 fb - 1 recorded with the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. In the dilepton mass-squared range 0 . 1 < q 2 < 6 . 0 GeV 2 /c 4 and the pK - mass range m ( pK - ) < 2600 MeV /c 2 , the ratio of branching fractions is measured to be \( {R}_{pK}^{-1}={1.17}_{-0.16}^{+0.18}\pm 0.07 \) , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the first test of lepton universality with b baryons and the first observation of the decay \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) → pK - e + e - .

Detection of the Pairwise Kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect with BOSS DR11 and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope

We present a new measurement of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect using data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). Using 600 square degrees of overlapping sky area, we evaluate the mean pairwise baryon momentum associated with the positions of 50,000 bright galaxies in the BOSS DR11 Large Scale Structure catalog. A non-zero signal arises from the large-scale motions of halos containing the sample galaxies. The data fits an analytical signal model well, with the optical depth to microwave photon scattering as a free parameter determining the overall signal amplitude. We estimate the covariance matrix of the mean pairwise momentum as a function of galaxy separation, using microwave sky simulations, jackknife evaluation, and bootstrap estimates. The most conservative simulation-based errors give signal-to-noise estimates between 3.6 and 4.1 for varying galaxy luminosity cuts. We discuss how the other error determinations can lead to higher signal-to-noise values, and consider the impact of several possible systematic errors. Estimates of the optical depth from the average thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich signal at the sample galaxy positions are broadly consistent with those obtained from the mean pairwise momentum signal.

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: The Polarization-Sensitive ACTPol Instrument

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) makes high angular resolution measurements of anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at millimeter wavelengths. We describe ACTPol, an upgraded receiver for ACT, which uses feedhorn-coupled, polarization-sensitive detector arrays, a 3deg field of view, 100 mK cryogenics with continuous cooling, and meta material antireflection coatings. ACTPol comprises three arrays with separate cryogenic optics: two arrays at a central frequency of 148 GHz and one array operating simultaneously at both 97 GHz and 148 GHz. The combined instrument sensitivity, angular resolution, and sky coverage are optimized for measuring angular power spectra, clusters via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) and kinetic SZ signals, and CMB lensing due to large-scale structure. The receiver was commissioned with its first 148 GHz array in 2013, observed with both 148 GHz arrays in 2014, and has recently completed its first full season of operations with the full suite of three arrays. This paper provides an overview of the design and initial performance of the receiver and related systems.
