57 Fe nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopic studies of tetranuclear iron clusters bearing terminal iron( III )–oxido/hydroxido moieties

57 Fe nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) has been applied to study a series of tetranuclear iron ([Fe 4 ]) clusters based on a multidentate ligand platform (L 3− ) anchored by a 1,3,5-triarylbenzene linker and pyrazolate or (tertbutylamino)pyrazolate ligand (PzNH t Bu − ). These clusters bear a terminal Fe(III)–O/OH moiety at the apical position and three additional iron centers forming the basal positions. The three basal irons are connected with the apical iron center via a μ 4 -oxido ligand. Detailed vibrational analysis via density functional theory calculations revealed that strong NRVS spectral features below 400 cm −1 can be used as an oxidation state marker for the overall [Fe 4 ] cluster core. The terminal Fe(III)–O/OH stretching frequencies, which were observed in the range of 500–700 cm −1 , can be strongly modulated (energy shifts of 20–40 cm −1 were observed) upon redox events at the three remote basal iron centers of the [Fe 4 ] cluster without the change of the terminal Fe(III) oxidation state and its coordination environment. Therefore, the current study provides a quantitative vibrational analysis of how the remote iron centers within the same iron cluster exert exquisite control of the chemical reactivities and thermodynamic properties of the specific iron site that is responsible for small molecule activation.

CO 2 Conversion to Butene via a Tandem Photovoltaic–Electrochemical/Photothermocatalytic Process: A Co-design Approach to Coupled Microenvironments

Here, we developed a tandem, unassisted, solar-driven electrochemical and photothermocatalytic process for the single-pass conversion of CO 2 to butene using only simulated solar irradiation as the energetic input. The two-step process involves electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R) to ethylene followed by ethylene dimerization to butene. We assessed two unassisted electrochemical setups to concentrate ethylene in the CO 2 R reactor, achieving concentrations up to 5.4 vol.% with 1.8% average solar-to-ethylene conversion and 5.6% average CO 2 -to-ethylene single-pass conversion under 1-sun illumination. When passed through the photothermocatalytic ethylene oligomerization reactor, we generated 600 ppm of butene under 3-sun illumination. Through analysis of this process, we identified that the presence of H 2 , CO, and H 2 O leads to rapid deactivation of the Ni-based ethylene oligomerization catalyst.

High‐Spin and Reactive Fe 13 Cluster with Exposed Metal Sites

Abstract Atomically defined large metal clusters have applications in new reaction development and preparation of materials with tailored properties. Expanding the synthetic toolbox for reactive high nuclearity metal complexes, we report a new class of Fe clusters, Tp* 4 W 4 Fe 13 S 12 , displaying a Fe 13 core with M−M bonds that has precedent only in main group and late metal chemistry. M 13 clusters with closed shell electron configurations can show significant stability and have been classified as superatoms. In contrast, Tp* 4 W 4 Fe 13 S 12 displays a large spin ground state of S =13. This compound performs small molecule activations involving the transfer of up to 12 electrons resulting in significant cluster rearrangements.

Organic Additive‐derived Films on Cu Electrodes Promote Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction to C 2+ Products Under Strongly Acidic Conditions

Abstract Electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R) at low pH is desired for high CO 2 utilization; the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a challenge. High alkali cation concentration at a high operating current density has recently been used to promote electrochemical CO 2 R at low pH. Herein we report an alternative approach to selective CO 2 R (>70 % Faradaic efficiency for C 2+ products, FE C2+ ) at low pH (pH 2; H 3 PO 4 /KH 2 PO 4 ) and low potassium concentration ([K + ]=0.1 M) using organic film‐modified polycrystalline copper (Modified‐Cu). Such an electrode effectively mitigates HER due to attenuated proton transport. Modified‐Cu still achieves high FE C2+ (45 % with Cu foil /55 % with Cu GDE) under 1.0 M H 3 PO 4 (pH≈1) at low [K + ] (0.1 M), even at low operating current, conditions where HER can otherwise dominate.

Molecular Coatings Improve the Selectivity and Durability of CO 2 Reduction Chalcogenide Photocathodes

The quest for solar-driven conversion of carbon dioxide to chemicals and fuels hinges upon the identification of an efficient, durable, and selective photocathode. Chalcogenide p-type semiconductors exemplified by chalcopyrite Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS) have been effectively deployed as photocathodes. However, selectivity toward CO 2 reduction and durability of the commonly used CdS adlayer remain primary challenges. Here, we demonstrate that for the wide band gap CuGa 3 Se 5 chalcopyrite absorber these challenges are well addressed by an organic coating generated in situ from an N,N'-(1,4-phenylene)bispyridinium ditriflate salt in the electrolyte. The molecular additive provides a 30-fold increase in selectivity toward CO2R products compared to the unmodified system and lowers Cd corrosion at least 10-fold. This dual functionality highlights the promise of hybrid solid-state-molecular photocathodes for enabling durable and efficient solar fuel systems.

CaMn 3 IV O 4 Cubane Models of the Oxygen‐Evolving Complex: Spin Ground States S <9/2 and the Effect of Oxo Protonation

Abstract We report the single crystal XRD and MicroED structure, magnetic susceptibility, and EPR data of a series of CaMn 3 IV O 4 and YMn 3 IV O 4 complexes as structural and spectroscopic models of the cuboidal subunit of the oxygen‐evolving complex (OEC). The effect of changes in heterometal identity, cluster geometry, and bridging oxo protonation on the spin‐state structure was investigated. In contrast to previous computational models, we show that the spin ground state of CaMn 3 IV O 4 complexes and variants with protonated oxo moieties need not be S =9/2. Desymmetrization of the pseudo ‐ C 3 ‐symmetric Ca(Y)Mn 3 IV O 4 core leads to a lower S =5/2 spin ground state. The magnitude of the magnetic exchange coupling is attenuated upon oxo protonation, and an S =3/2 spin ground state is observed in CaMn 3 IV O 3 (OH). Our studies complement the observation that the interconversion between the low‐spin and high‐spin forms of the S 2 state is pH‐dependent, suggesting that the (de)protonation of bridging or terminal oxygen atoms in the OEC may be connected to spin‐state changes.
