Buildings Sector Scenarios: Demand-side data to support energy system planning in the United States

The US energy system is in a period of high uncertainty about load growth, its implications for the energy generation mix, and downstream impacts on customer energy costs. In this context, there is a need for comprehensive, credible, and readily-customized projections of energy demand to ensure that planning decisions account for end-use management opportunities to improve system reliability and affordability. Here we introduce the Buildings Sector Scenarios (BSS) dataset, which includes a benchmark suite of such projections for the buildings sector — a key source of energy consumption, peak electricity demand, and consumer energy expenditures. The dataset contains projections through 2050 covering the contiguous United States (CONUS) resolved down to the county, hourly level by sector and end use for electricity demand and to the state, annual level by sector and end use for non-electric fuels. We summarize the BSS analysis workflow and the tools and datasets that support it, document key BSS scenario inputs and modeling assumptions, and outline BSS scenario outputs. We assess the technical quality of the dataset against historical surveys and projected estimates of buildings sector demand. Finally, we provide guidance on how stakeholders can access, use, and reproduce the dataset, and/or create new scenarios to explore their own analysis questions.

ResStock 2024.2 Dataset [Slides]

In the ResStock 2024.2 dataset, ResStock runs are used to create "what-if" scenarios including energy efficiency measures such as heat pumps, envelope improvements, and electrification of appliances. This dataset release includes 15 measure packages across two weather years and incorporates ResStock improvements in variable speed heat pump modeling, geothermal heat pump modeling, and housing characteristic data updates from RECS 2020.

ResStock™ v3.2.0 [SWR-19-15 and SWR-20-07]

The ResStock™ analysis tool was built on NREL's OpenStudio® platform, and is a project geared at modeling existing residential building stocks at national, regional, or local scales with a high-degree of granularity (e.g., one physics-based simulation model for every 200 dwelling units), using the EnergyPlus® simulation engine. Information about ComStock™, a sister tool for modeling the commercial building stock, can be found here: https://www.nrel.gov/buildings/comstock.html This repository contains: Housing characteristics of the U.S. residential building stock, in the form of conditional probability distributions stored as tab-separated value (.tsv) files. Comments at the bottom of each file document data sources and assumptions for each. A library of housing characteristic "options" that translate high-level characteristic parameters into arguments for OpenStudio measures, and which are referenced by the housing characteristic .tsv files and building energy upgrades defined in project definition files Project definition files: v2.3.0 and later: buildstockbatch YML files openable in any text editor v2.2.5 and prior: Project folder openable in PAT Unit-level OpenStudio Measures for automatically constructing OpenStudio Models of each representative dwelling unit model: v3.0.0 and later: OpenStudio-HPXML Measures v2.5.0 and prior: OpenStudio Measures Higher-level OpenStudio Measures for controlling simulation inputs and outputs This repository does not contain software for running ResStock simulations, which can be found as follows: Versions 2.3.0 and later only support the use of buildstockbatch for deploying simulations on high-performance or cloud computing. Version 2.3.0 also removed separate projects for single-family detached and multifamily buildings, in lieu of a combined project_national representing the U.S. residential building stock. See the changelog for more details. Versions 2.2.5 and prior support the use of the publicly available OpenStudio-PAT software as an interface for deploying simulations on cloud computing. Read the documentation for v2.2.5.

BuildStockQuery [SWR-23-58]

BuildStockQuery is a python library designed to simplify and streamline the process of querying massive, terabyte-scale datasets generated by ResStock(TM). ResStock (SWR-19-15) is a U.S. DOE-supported, NREL-built, national residential building energy stock model that enables a new approach to large-scale residential energy analysis across the U.S. by combining large public and private data sources, statistical sampling, detailed sub-hourly building simulations, and high-performance computing. BuildStockQuery offers an intuitive Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) interface to the ResStock output dataset allowing users to easily perform common queries and receive results in familiar pandas DataFrame format, abstracting away the need for complex SQL query. By initializing a query object with the pertinent Athena database and table names, users can easily query for various kinds of insights, for example, timeseries electricity for an end use for a given state grouped by building types.

Structural deformation and mechanical response of CrS 2 , CrSe 2 and Janus CrSSe

In the framework of density functional theory (DFT), we investigate the structural deformation, and mechanical behavior of the Janus CrSSe, which has out-of-plane structural asymmetry, with conventional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) CrS 2 and CrSe 2 . The Janus CrSSe could be a potential candidate for machinable optoelectronic and piezoelectric applications. Here, we predict that these compounds are chemically, mechanically, and dynamically stable with the covalent bond between the TM(Cr) and chalcogen(X=S, Se) atoms. Due to the influence of tensile strain, the Cr–X bond length of each monolayers increases and the thickness decreases. Interestingly, the in-plane stiffness, shear and layer moduli, Poisson’s ratio, ultimate bi/uni-axial stress of Janus CrSSe are in between the values of CrS 2 and CrSe 2 monolayers. Similar to TMDs, the orientation-dependent in-plane stiffness and Poisson’s ratio demonstrates the isotropic behavior in Janus CrSSe. Furthermore, it can sustain a larger value of uni/bi-axial tensile strain with the critical strain equivalent to CrX 2 monolayers. By applying higher-order strain, we have also found average elastic–plastic behavior as expected. These findings demonstrate that the Janus CrSSe monolayer is a mechanically stable and ductile compound that maintains the hybrid behavior.
