Search for B 0 → K *0 𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − Decays at the Belle II Experiment

We present a search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decay 𝐵 0 →𝐾 *0 ⁢𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − with data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. The analysis uses a 365 fb −1 data sample recorded at the center-of-mass energy of the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) resonance. One of the 𝐵 mesons produced in the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆)→𝐵 0 $⁢\overline{𝐵}$ 0 process is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode, while its companion 𝐵 meson is required to decay into a 𝐾 *0 and two 𝜏 leptons of opposite charge. The 𝜏 leptons are reconstructed in final states with a single electron, muon, charged pion or charged 𝜌 meson, and additional neutrinos. We set an upper limit on the branching fraction of ℬ⁡(𝐵 0 →𝐾 *0 ⁢𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − )<1.8×10 −3 at the 90% confidence level, which is the most stringent constraint reported to date.

Measurement of 𝐵 + →𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 branching fraction with a hadronic tagging method at Belle II

We present a measurement of the branching fraction of 𝐵 + →𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 decays using 387±6×10 6 ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) collected between 2019 and 2022 with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collider. We reconstruct the accompanying 𝐵 − meson using the hadronic tagging method, while 𝐵 + →𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 candidates are identified in the recoil. We find evidence for 𝐵 + →𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 decays at 3.0 standard deviations, including systematic uncertainties. The measured branching fraction is ℬ⁡(𝐵 + →𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 )=[1.24±0.41⁢(stat)±0.19⁢(syst)]×10 −4 .

Test of lepton flavor universality with measurements of 𝑅⁡(𝐷 + ) and 𝑅⁡(𝐷* + ) using semileptonic 𝐵 tagging at the Belle II experiment

We report measurements of the ratios of branching fractions ℛ⁡(𝐷 (*)+ ) = ℬ⁡($\bar{𝐵}$ 0 → 𝐷 (*)+ ⁢𝜏 −⁢ $\bar{𝜈}$ 𝜏 )/ℬ⁡($\bar{𝐵}$ 0 → 𝐷 (*)+ ⁢ℓ − $\bar{𝜈}$ ℓ ), where ℓ denotes either an electron or a muon. These ratios test the universality of the charged-current weak interaction. The results are based on a 365 fb −1 data sample collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collider, which operates at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) resonance, just above the threshold for $𝐵\bar{𝐵}$ production. Signal candidates are reconstructed by selecting events in which the companion 𝐵 meson from the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) → $𝐵\bar{𝐵}$ decay is identified in semileptonic modes. The 𝜏 lepton is reconstructed via its leptonic decays. We obtain ℛ⁡(𝐷 + ) = 0.418$^{+0.075}_{−0.073}$⁢(stat)$^{+0.049}_{−0.056}$⁢(syst) and ℛ⁡(𝐷 *+ ) = 0.306$^{+0.035}_{−0.033}$⁢(stat)$^{+0.016}_{−0.018⁢}$(syst), which are consistent with world average values. Accounting for the correlation between them, these values differ from the Standard Model expectation by a collective significance of 1.7 standard deviations.

Search for Lepton-Flavor-Violating Decay Modes 𝐵 0 →𝐾$^0_𝑆$⁢𝜏 ± ⁢ℓ ∓ with Hadronic 𝐵 Tagging at Belle and Belle II

We present the first search for the lepton-flavor-violating decay modes 𝐵 0 →𝐾$^0_𝑆$⁢𝜏 ± ⁢ℓ ∓ (ℓ=𝜇,𝑒) using the 711 and 365 fb −1 data samples recorded by the Belle and Belle II detectors, respectively. We use a hadronic 𝐵-tagging technique to fully reconstruct a 𝐵 meson and search for signal decays in the system recoiling against the tagged meson, considering 𝜏 decays to either light leptons, one charged hadron, or one charged hadron and a neutral pion. We find no evidence for 𝐵 0 →𝐾$^0_𝑆$⁢𝜏 ± ⁢ℓ ∓ decays and set 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions in the range of [0.8,3.6] ×10 −5 .

Measurement of branching fractions, C P asymmetry, and isospin asymmetry for B → ρ γ decays using Belle and Belle II data

We present measurements of B + → ρ + γ and B 0 → ρ 0 γ decays using a combined data sample of 772 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and 387 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment in e + e − collisions at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance. After an optimized selection, a simultaneous fit to the Belle and Belle II datasets yields 114 ± 12 B + → ρ + γ and 99 ± 12 B 0 → ρ 0 γ decays. The measured branching fractions are ( 13.1 − 1.9 − 1.2 + 2.0 + 1.3 ) × 10 − 7 and ( 7.6 ± 1.3 − 0.8 + 1.0 ) × 10 − 7 for B + → ρ + γ and B 0 → ρ 0 γ decays, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also measure the isospin asymmetry A I ( B → ρ γ ) = ( 10.9 − 11.7 − 7.3 + 11.2 + 7.8 ) % and the direct C P asymmetry A C P ( B + → ρ + γ ) = ( − 8.2 ± 15.2 − 1.3 + 2.0 ) % . Test of lepton flavor universality with a measurement of R ( D * ) using hadronic B tagging at the Belle II experiment

The ratio of branching fractions R ( D * ) = B ( B ¯ → D * τ − ν ¯ τ ) / B ( B ¯ → D * ℓ − ν ¯ ℓ ) , where ℓ is an electron or muon, is measured using a Belle II data sample with an integrated luminosity of 189 fb − 1 at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. Data is collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance, and one B meson in the ϒ ( 4 S ) → B B ¯ decay is fully reconstructed in hadronic decay modes. The accompanying signal B meson is reconstructed as B ¯ → D * τ − ν ¯ τ using leptonic τ decays. The normalization decay, B ¯ → D * ℓ − ν ¯ ℓ , produces the same observable final-state particles. The ratio of branching fractions is extracted in a simultaneous fit to two signal-discriminating variables in both channels and yields R ( D * ) = 0.262 − 0.039 + 0.041 ( stat ) − 0.032 + 0.035 ( syst ) . This result is consistent with the current world average and with Standard Model predictions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Angular analysis of B → K * e + e − in the low- q 2 region with new electron identification at Belle

We perform an angular analysis of the B → K * e + e − decay for the dielectron mass squared, q 2 , range of 0.0008 – 1.1200 GeV 2 / c 4 using the full Belle dataset in the K * 0 → K + π − and K * + → K S 0 π + channels, incorporating new methods of electron identification to improve the statistical power of the dataset. This analysis is sensitive to contributions from right-handed currents from physics beyond the Standard Model by constraining the Wilson coefficients C 7 ( ′ ) . We perform a fit to the B → K * e + e − differential decay rate and measure the imaginary component of the transversality amplitude to be A T Im = − 1.27 ± 0.52 ± 0.12 , and the K * transverse asymmetry to be A T ( 2 ) = 0.52 ± 0.53 ± 0.11 , with F L and A T Re fixed to the Standard Model values. The resulting constraints on the value of C 7 ′ are consistent with the Standard Model within a 2 σ confidence interval. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for a μ + μ − resonance in four-muon final states at Belle II

We report on a search for a resonance X decaying to a pair of muons in e + e − → μ + μ − X events in the 0.212 – 9.000 GeV / c 2 mass range, using 178 fb − 1 of data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider at a center of mass energy of 10.58 GeV. The analysis probes two different models of X beyond the standard model: a Z ′ vector boson in the L μ − L τ model and a muonphilic scalar. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at the 90% confidence level on the products of cross section and branching fraction for these processes, ranging from 0.046 fb to 0.97 fb for the L μ − L τ model and from 0.055 fb to 1.3 fb for the muonphilic scalar model. For masses below 6 GeV / c 2 , the corresponding constraints on the couplings of these processes to the standard model range from 0.0008 to 0.039 for the L μ − L τ model and from 0.0018 to 0.040 for the muonphilic scalar model. These are the first constraints on the muonphilic scalar from a dedicated search. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Evidence for B + → K + ν ν ¯ decays

We search for the rare decay B + → K + ν ν ¯ in a 362 fb − 1 sample of electron-positron collisions at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use the inclusive properties of the accompanying B meson in ϒ ( 4 S ) → B B ¯ events to suppress background from other decays of the signal B candidate and light-quark pair production. We validate the measurement with an auxiliary analysis based on a conventional hadronic reconstruction of the accompanying B meson. For background suppression, we exploit distinct signal features using machine learning methods tuned with simulated data. The signal-reconstruction efficiency and background suppression are validated through various control channels. The branching fraction is extracted in a maximum likelihood fit. Our inclusive and hadronic analyses yield consistent results for the B + → K + ν ν ¯ branching fraction of [ 2.7 ± 0.5 ( stat ) ± 0.5 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 and [ 1.1 − 0.8 + 0.9 ( stat ) − 0.5 + 0.8 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 , respectively. Combining the results, we determine the branching fraction of the decay B + → K + ν ν ¯ to be [ 2.3 ± 0.5 ( stat ) − 0.4 + 0.5 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 , providing the first evidence for this decay at 3.5 standard deviations. The combined result is 2.7 standard deviations above the standard model expectation. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

First Measurement of R ( X τ / ℓ ) as an Inclusive Test of the b → c τ ν Anomaly

We measure the tau-to-light-lepton ratio of inclusive B -meson branching fractions R ( X τ / ℓ ) ≡ B ( B → X τ ν ) / B ( B → X ℓ ν ) , where ℓ indicates an electron or muon, and thereby test the universality of charged-current weak interactions. We select events that have one fully reconstructed B meson and a charged lepton candidate from 189 fb − 1 of electron-positron collision data collected with the Belle II detector. We find R ( X τ / ℓ ) = 0.228 ± 0.016 ( stat ) ± 0.036 ( syst ) , in agreement with standard-model expectations. This is the first direct measurement of R ( X τ / ℓ ) .
